Explore is where you can interact with your scans in a first- or third-person perspective, very similar to a video game. Once you've loaded a scan, if you aren't making modifications to the environment the next stop is Exploring the environment in Explore.

You must have a scan loaded before you can enter Explore. Follow the instructions at Loading Your First Scan (and Sample Scans)to load a scan.

With a scan loaded, simply click "Explore" from the Main Menu to enter Explore.

You will first need to select your spawn location (unless that location has been set by a spawn point from within Designer).

To select a Spawn location with your mouse, left-click and drag (without releasing the mouse button) to pick a spot to drop your character into the scan. You can also use the mouse scroll-wheel to zoom in/out. You can also Right Click to reset the view back to the original. Once you've placed the crosshairs where you want to spawn, press the Spacebar.

Once you've dropped into the environment, you can start walking around. There are controls for mouse/keyboard and a controller that can be setup and changed via the Settings menu on the Main Menu. Default Keyboard/Mouse basic controls are as follows:

Basic Controls

  • W-A-S-D: Use these keys to move your character through the scanned environment. They correlate to Forward, Left, Backward, and Right.

  • Mouse Look: Use the mouse to move your characters head and look around the scan.

  • SHIFT Key: Sprint, use this key to make your character move faster.

  • C Key: Press 'C' to crouch

  • Spacebar: Press to jump

  • Right Click: In most cases, press to zoom your view. This action might change based on the tool selected.

  • V Key: Press 'V' to toggle between first- and third-person view

  • TAB Key: Press 'Tab' to pause RSET and open the Pause Menu.

Explore Tools

There are several tools available in Explore mode. Below are short descriptions for each. Press the F1 key inside RSET to show the help associated with each tool.

  • Opacity Tool: The first tool allows you to turn down the opacity of the texture directly under the crosshairs on the screen using the Mouse Scrollwheel. For example, here we see the user looking through the wall to discover the stairwell behind it:

  • Object Spawn: The object spawn tool is used to quickly spawn objects into the scan. Press '2' to active the tool and then use the Mouse Scrollwheel to cycle through the options - currently a table, a chair, and a safety cone. Click the Left Mouse Button to place the object. Use the J and K keys to rotate the object before spawning. Depending on your keybinds, Q and E can be used to smooth rotate the object:

  • Paint Tool: The Paint Tool is used to markup the surfaces of the 3D Scan / Environment. Pressing Q or E will cycle through your paint colors (which can be customized via Settings). The Mouse Scrollwheel will change the size of the brush. Backspace or Delete will remove all paint currently in the scene, G will fill an entire texture segment with the selected paint color, and clicking the Right Mouse Button will toggle on/off the eraser. NOTE you do not need to hold the Right Mouse Button simply click to toggle the eraser on, and click again to toggle it back to normal paint mode.

  • Measure Tool: This tool allows you to take measurements of the underlying mesh data in a variety of ways. Note that the accuracy of this tool is limited to the accuracy of the scan itself. Results of any measuring activity are displayed directly above the tool icon:

Left click two points to take a linear measurement between them. Pressing Left Shift will toggle on/off distance snapping - this is useful if instead of measuring the distance between two points, you want to visualize a distance from a point to a point in space a pre-determined distance away (in 0.25m increments). Caps Lock will toggle on/off angle mode, allowing you to take angular measurements. Similar to distance snapping, if you press Left Control you will toggle on/off angular snapping, allowing you to visualize angles at even increments (0°, 15°, 30°, 45°, etc). Angle snapping will only have an effect in angle mode, just as distance snapping will only have an effect in distance mode

  • Drone Tool: The drone tool is accessed by pressing the number 5 on the keyboard. After first accessing the tool, you'll see a bit of static, indicating the launch of the drone. You can now use the mouse to look, W-A-S-D to move, Left Ctrl to lower altitude, and Space to raise altitude. Left Shift can also be used for a speed increase. While using the drone, collisions are disabled, allowing you to get shots and viewpoints unavailable from the characters perspective. You can press E to toggle between drone and character view, and you can press R to reclaim the drone - you'll just need to Left Click if you want to throw it back out again.

  • Marker Tool: A portion of the marker tool depends on adding rich media markers in Designer, but you can still use this tool straight from Explore to add simple text-based annotations. Access the tool by pressing 6, then Right Click to place a text annotation on the mesh. You will want to press and hold the Right Mouse Button to move the marker around. Note that at the time of this writing, annotations places in explore are rotated to face the character when they are spawned and cannot be rotated once placed inside Explore. Take this into account when initially creating your marker if you want it to face a certain way. You can Left Click on a marker to start editing its text, and press Enter (or Return) to exit Edit mode.

  • Camera Tool: The camera tool, accessed via button 7, is generally best used with Showcase Cameras added via Designer. You can still record from your perspective, but it will be the only view recorded without additional Showcase Cameras placed first. If you press R with this tool active, you will begin screen-recording both the character viewpoint and any Showcase Cameras viewpoints simultaneously. Your recording is saved to the RSET_Scans folder, under a new Recordings/ sub-folder. The Up Arrow can be used to cycle through available recording resolutions
